This is a selfie at the fishing village, Finisterrae, in northwest Spain. And those are my hiking shoes, tied to the end of my trekking pole, stuck in the crevice of a large rock overlooking the Atlantic. I had recently completed my second walk along the historic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, and was visiting the place once considered to be the end of the world, hence the name (finis, end; terrae, land). I learned quite a bit about myself along that 550-mile trek, and made more than a handful of new, lifelong friends from such places as Denmark, England, Norway, South Africa and Spain.
I'm a native Houstonian, now living in small-town central Texas with three females: a highly neurotic and mostly blind mini-dachshund, a rescued calico cat with an eating disorder, and my lovely wife, who keeps everything together.
I have a journalism degree from the University of Houston, and was a newspaper reporter and photographer for 20 years or so. I’m proud to say I’ve won some awards for news reporting, and also for column writing. Along with writing books and different things, I keep my hand in the newspaper game by contributing feature stories in various publications from time to time.
There’s just something about newspapers. I’ll always love ‘em.
I also offer proofreading, editing and ghostwriting services for fellow writers. If you have the urge to write, just do it. As a friend of mine once said, "Writers write." So that's what I do. And so should you.
If you have ever thought about writing a book – your biography, or maybe a family history or something like that – check out my “Writing services” page.
OK, that’s it, I reckon. I have some painting and some writing to do …
